“I was a cage dancer and did everything to hustle” Denrele Edun recounts his struggles (Video)


Media personality, Denrele Edun has recounted his early struggles and rise to fame.


The TV presenter in an interview on Arise News TV, revealed that he was once a cage dancer. According to him, he danced for the African Shrine and did everything to hustle. At that time, he was still a student and was a backup dancer for African Shrine during the weekends. Denrele also revealed that he was also a dancer for the Iroko band.


Reflecting on his struggles, he stated that May 21 would be his 3rd decade in the Entertainment Industry as he noted how he started his career professionally in 1994.


“I used to dance in the shrine. I used to be in the cage, yes, I used to be one of the cage dancers. I did everything to hustle at that time. And I was still in Unilag at that time. So I was a backup dancer every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at the African Shrine and I was a cage dancer.


Also, I used to dance for the Iroko band which was headlined by Dr Ola Balogun, one of the pioneers of filmmaking. Come May 21st I will be marking 3 decades in the Entertainment Industry. I started professionally in 1994, on a TV soap opera. My first paycheck was N150”.

Last month, while celebrating Mother’s Day, Denrele had recounted his mother’s sacrifices for him and his siblings.


In a lengthy post on his Instagram page, he revealed that his mother worked several jobs in Lagos to make life worth living for them, as he noted how she juggled between different jobs.


He recounted how in 1989/1990, she had to sell her Indian Saris and gold ornaments to raise money for his Common Entrance, which left her distraught. He further disclosed that moving to their family house was hell on earth for them as he recalled the bitter experiences he faced.


In a past interview, Denrele recounted how he was almost sexually harassed by a UNILAG lecturer, as the lecturer mistook him for a female because of his cross-dressing. He alleged that the lecturer wanted him to perform oral sex with him, but he respectfully refused.


In other news, Denrele Edun opened up on his battle with a stroke, revealing that he was very sick at the time because he had a stroke. According to him, the stroke was on half of his face but it still didn’t stop him from working.


He disclosed that his face was dropping on the right side and anytime he drank water, it would pour out of his mouth. Edun said he had trouble breathing, and seeing clearly, his front hair fell out and his right leg was paralyzed.
