We are raising a generation of depressed people – ID Cabassa

Nigerian media personality I.D. Cabassa has brought a serious issue to light, expressing concern about the mental health of the country’s youth. In a recent statement, he pointed out the prevalence of depression and drug addiction among young Nigerians. I.D. Cabassa revealed that the nation is potentially losing a generation to these twin scourges.

“We are raising a generation of depressed people who are addicted to drugs. During covid, we took care of a top artist who was depressed and seriously addicted to drugs”-

Delving deeper into the issue, he recalled the COVID-19 pandemic period in 2020, when he witnessed firsthand the struggles of a top artist who battled severe depression and drug addiction.

Further emphasizing the gravity of the situation, I.D. Cabassa noted how societal pressures and current events in Nigeria contribute significantly to the widespread feeling of despair among the youth. This observation aligns with a growing concern about mental health issues in many parts of the world.

In a related development, renowned Nigerian filmmaker Funke Akindele shared her thoughts on depression and kindness in May 2023. Taking to Twitter, Akindeli posted a thought-provoking and somewhat cryptic message. She stressed the reality of depression and the importance of kindness towards others. Her message urged people not to compromise their happiness and to remain humane in their interactions.

Akindele’s tweet went further to describe everyone as an “engineer” of their world, highlighting the need for caution, awareness, and the sharing of peace. She advised her followers to embrace risk-taking, show gratitude for every success, and maintain a positive outlook. Concluding her message, she emphasized the importance of love, forgiveness, and the pursuit of happiness.

These statements from both Cabassa and Akindeli shine a spotlight on the mental health challenges facing individuals in Nigeria, particularly among the youth
