Two feared dead, many trapped as four-storey building collapses in Abuja



Two people have been feared dead and 50 others trapped as a four-storey building collapsed in the Gwarimpa area of Abuja.
The incident occurred at the nation’s capital on Thursday, February 2, 2023.

Director of Development Control for the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), Muktar Galadima, confirmed the incident and stated that a rescue effort was underway with the help of a team from multiple agencies.
He also stated that approximately 7 people had been saved and taken to the hospital.

Although there had been no confirmed casualties, he said that numerous workers were still pinned beneath the crumbling structure
The Coordinator of Abuja Metropolitan Management Council ( AMMC), Umar Shuaibu said while the council won’t appropriately blame anybody, but an investigation will commence immediately to ascertain both the remote and immediate cause of the collapse.

According to an eyewitness, John Edwin said the workers on the site, especially labourers conveying blocks to the top, were over 50.

He claimed to have lived in the area for many years, and that he has always known the place to be a reserved green area.

Edwin urged relevant authorities to call the management of the Federal Housing Authority to question, for illegally allocating Green areas to commercial complexes.

According to an eyewitness, James Okon, said the workers in the site, especially laborers conveying blocks to the top, were over 40.
He claimed to have lived in the area for many years and always known the place to be a reserved green area.

Okon urged relevant authorities to call the management of Federal Housing Authority to question, for illegally allocating Green areas to commercial complex.
