One week from kick-off, the World Cup trophy returned to Qatar on Sunday, teams and fans started arriving and safety barriers went up across Doha ahead of one of the most controversial football tournaments ever.

The police in Plateau State on Friday confirmed the arrest of a 25-year-old boy, Bernard Danlami, for stoning his father to death in the Mangu Local Government of the state.
The state Commissioner of Police, Onyeka Bartholomew, confirmed Bernard’s arrest while addressing journalists on the activities of the command at its headquarters in Jos on Friday.
Building collapses on Ibadan mosque, one dies

A warehouse under construction in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, has collapsed killing one person.
It was learnt that the building, which was said to have collapsed on a mosque beside it, left another victim injured.
The incident, it was gathered, happened in the Soka area of Ibadan, around the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Friday.
A resident told our correspondent on Saturday that the deceased was identified as Bolaji, a teenager.
Bandits demand N10m to release victim’s corpse

Bandits have demanded N10 million as ransom before releasing the corpse of one of their victims, Obadiah Ibrahim, who they kidnapped a few weeks ago in Kaduna State.
Brother to the victim, Kefas Obadiah, said the bandits had collected N3 million but still refused to release the corpse of the victim abducted in October.
“Ibrahim had died on Monday and they informed us on Thursday. We asked for his corpse and they said we should pay them N10 million if we wanted the corpse, (that) they’d not work for us free of charge,” he said.

A Chief Magistrates Court sitting in Abeokuta, Ogun State, has sentenced a 19-year-old man, Olamide Olasode, to seven years in prison, without an option of fine, for stealing cables worth N397,000 from an uncompleted building.
The Magistrate, I.O Abudu, sentenced Olasode after the latter had pleaded guilty to the two counts of felony and stealing brought against him.
